(Symbolbild: unsplash)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Egal ob Kosmetik, Treibstoff oder auch Bioplastik-Strohhalme \u2013 f\u00fcr alle diese G\u00fcter wird auf Palm\u00f6l, Soja, Ethanol und andere Rohstoffe zur\u00fcckgegriffen. 935000 Tonnen an pflanzlichen Rohstoffen (111 kg pro Kopf) aus dem Ackerbau konsumiert \u00d6sterreich j\u00e4hrlich alleine f\u00fcr die Produktion von Nicht-Ern\u00e4hrungsprodukten. Zum Vergleich: In Europa liegt der Wert bei 52 Millionen Tonnen oder durchschnittlich 103 kg pro Kopf. Eine aktuelle Studie von Martin Bruckner, Stefan Giljum und Victor Maus vom Institute for Ecological Economics der Wirtschaftsuniversit\u00e4t Wien gemeinsam mit KollegInnen des International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA), der Stockholm University und der Universit\u00e4t Bonn untersuchte die Herkunft der landwirtschaftlichen Rohstoffe f\u00fcr in Europa konsumierte Produkte.<\/p>\n<p>Dabei zeigte sich: Europa ben\u00f6tigt Ressourcen weit \u00fcber seine Grenzen hinaus. Rund 65 Prozent der ben\u00f6tigten pflanzlichen Rohstoffe stammen von anderen Kontinenten \u2013 vielfach aus tropischen Regionen. Im Ern\u00e4hrungsbereich ist der Bedarf Europas an ausl\u00e4ndischen Rohstoffen zwar tendenziell ebenfalls steigend, aber mit 15 Prozent deutlich niedriger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Konsumreduktion ist effektiver Umweltschutz<\/strong><br \/>\nDie meisten pflanzlichen Rohstoffe f\u00fcr Europas Nutzung werden aus Asien bezogen, nach Baumwolle (1,7 Millionen Hektar v.a. aus Indien, China und Pakistan) steht Palm\u00f6l hier an zweiter Stelle: Etwa 6,4 Milliarden Liter \u2013 geerntet auf einer Fl\u00e4che von rund 1,6 Millionen Hektar j\u00e4hrlich \u2013 werden entweder unverarbeitet oder bereits in Form von verarbeiteten G\u00fctern meist aus Indonesien oder Malaysia nach Europa gebracht. Hier wird es zum Beispiel f\u00fcr Biodiesel, Reinigungsmittel, Seifen, kosmetische Produkte oder Kerzen verwendet. Zudem liefert Asien Kautschuk von rund 1,3 Millionen Hektar Anbaufl\u00e4che und Kokos\u00f6l von 0,7 Millionen Hektar. 1,2 Millionen Hektar der Ackerfl\u00e4chen Asiens werden f\u00fcr die Viehzucht zur Herstellung von Leder und Wolle f\u00fcr den Konsum in Europa genutzt. Der Umstieg von Palm\u00f6l auf heimischen Raps ist allerdings keine globale L\u00f6sung, sagt Martin Bruckner: \u201eF\u00fcr die gleiche Menge an \u00d6l br\u00e4uchten wir in Europa dreimal so viel Fl\u00e4che, die Folge w\u00e4ren erh\u00f6hte Treibhausgasemissionen und Biodiversit\u00e4tsverluste. Nur durch eine starke Reduktion unseres Konsums k\u00f6nnen die \u00d6kosysteme unseres Planeten effektiv gesch\u00fctzt werden.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Aus den USA holt Europa maisbasiertes Ethanol, vorwiegend zur Beimengung zu Benzin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Massive Entwaldung, globale Problemverlagerung<\/strong><br \/>\nDie massive Ausweitung an \u00d6lpalmplantagen fordert eine zunehmende Abholzung nat\u00fcrlicher tropischer W\u00e4lder. Studienautor Martin Bruckner erkl\u00e4rt: \u201eDie starke Entwaldung f\u00fchrt zu einer hohen Freisetzung an Treibhausgasen \u2013 wir sehen, dass die Rodungen s\u00fcdostasiatischer W\u00e4lder bis zum Jahr 2002 sogar mehr Emissionen als chinesische Kohlekraftwerke im selben Zeitraum verursachten. Zudem zeigen sich erschreckende Verluste an Biodiversit\u00e4t\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Die derzeit von der Politik gesetzten Schritte greifen f\u00fcr Bruckner und seine KollegInnen zu kurz: \u201eWir sehen, dass einige umweltpolitische Ma\u00dfnahmen eher Probleme verlagern, als sie zu l\u00f6sen. Beispielsweise f\u00fchrte die Biokraftstoffverordnung zwar einerseits zu verringerten CO2-Emissionen im heimischen Verkehr, verursachte aber ein ungeahntes Ausma\u00df an globaler Entwaldung und somit die Zerst\u00f6rung wertvoller \u00d6kosysteme. Die derzeitige Richtlinie zum Verbot von Einweg-Plastik l\u00e4sst \u00c4hnliches bef\u00fcrchten. Zwar k\u00f6nnte dadurch Plastik in den Weltmeeren reduziert werden, doch auch das Gesch\u00e4ftsmodell hinter Bioplastik ist sehr ressourcenintensiv\u201c, so Bruckner.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00dcber die Studie<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Zur Berechnung des Fl\u00e4chenfu\u00dfabdrucks nutzten die AutorInnen einerseits ein globales Handelsmodell, welches Produktfl\u00fcsse in physischen Einheiten abbildet und es erlaubt, landwirtschaftliche Produkte entlang internationaler Handelsrouten zu verfolgen. Andererseits wurde ein globales \u00f6konomisches Modell (EXIOBASE) in komplement\u00e4rer Form integriert, um industrielle Wertsch\u00f6pfungsketten abzubilden.
