«ISO 42001 AI Management Systems: Implementation and Certification—The Practical Guide to Artificial Intelligence in Business. Practical. Simple. «Unbürokratisch» (Unbureaucratic)—that’s the title of the latest book by AI and digitalization expert Dr. Jens-Uwe Meyer. In it, the CEO of DICIS AG in Leipzig explains, Which companies need an AI management system in accordance with ISO/IEC 42001 and how SMEs—that is, small and medium-sized enterprises—can obtain such certification easily and without red tape.
Standard for an Effective AI Management System
The 248-page book, published by BusinessVillage, is divided into seven chapters. In the first chapter, the author explains why so-called AI glitches can ultimately all be traced back to management errors and why, in most companies, AI management is not yet an established discipline—even though it should be.
In the second chapter, he then analyzes «The Ten Biggest AI Failures in Companies,» which gained widespread attention, in part due to media coverage. He also highlights the recurring patterns of thinking and behavior that led to these failures.
In the third chapter, Meyer introduces ISO 42001 as a globally recognized standard for an effective AI management system and describes which companies stand to benefit most from certification under this standard. He then provides readers with an initial overview of AI management according to ISO 42001 in Chapter 4 and explains how this standard can be implemented, before detailing in Chapter 5 how companies can develop a master plan for implementing ISO 42001 within their organization.
An Explanation of the Standard and Certification Process
Chapter 6 is the most comprehensive. It is titled «ISO 42001—The Requirements of the Standard Explained Simply.» In this chapter, the author takes a thorough look at the requirements of the ISO standard—for example, in the areas of leadership, communication, process management, and controlling. He also describes how these requirements can be met in a way that allows those responsible to consistently verify that,
- «Are we still on the right track?» and
- The overall system continues to evolve.
In Chapter 7, Meyer then presents a «list of measures for your AI management.» This includes, for example, aspects such as guidelines for the deployment and use of AI, ensuring data quality, and defining responsibilities.
The final chapter provides a detailed description of how the ISO 42001 certification process works. It also offers readers tips on what to look for when selecting a certification body.
Close to Real-World Practice
As you read the book, you get the sense that the author has been dealing with the topics of digitalization and AI for years—not just in his role as CEO of DICIS AG, a certification institute that aims to use artificial intelligence to minimize the effort required to set up and certify management systems. His tips are correspondingly concrete and practical. You can also tell that Meyer was formerly a chief reporter for TV stations like Pro Sieben and a program director for radio stations like Antenne Thüringen. His language is correspondingly simple and vivid, which is why his book is an easy read.
The book «ISO 42001 AI Management Systems: Implementation and Certification: …» will be published in October 2026 by Publisher BusinessVillage has been published. It costs 39.95 euros.
