New Master's degree program "Information and Cyber Security"
It is becoming increasingly important for companies to protect themselves against cyberattacks with the help of trained specialists. This is because attacks often cause high costs. Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) is therefore offering the new "Master of Science (MSc) in Information and Cyber Security" from the fall semester of 2025.

Cybersecurity is indispensable in today's digital world. It protects important infrastructures, safeguards sensitive information and ensures economic and social stability. With the Bachelor of Science in Information and Cyber Security, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is already training highly qualified cyber security specialists and managers who can respond professionally to threats. From the fall semester of 2025, the Department of Computer Science at HSLU will also offer the associated "Master of Science (MSc) in Information and Cyber Security" as a direct connection. This was decided by the Concordat Council of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts at its meeting on September 27, 2024.
Lack of managers
During their studies, students learn technical cyber security topics and important leadership skills. "There is currently a shortage of cyber security managers on the job market. In other words, specialists who not only deal with cyber security issues, but who can also take responsibility for and drive forward their field and lead a team," says course director Florian Wamser.
The Master's course offers a specialized programme that is completely geared towards cyber security. "This is unique in Switzerland and rare in Europe. All modules are directly related to cyber security and offer a comprehensive education," says Wamser. The focus is particularly on practical, technical cyber security. Students work with real examples, analyze cases and take part in exercises to deepen their skills.
Over 100 cyber security incidents in Central Switzerland
The increasing number of cyberattacks shows how important it is to have well-trained experts. So far this year, there have been over 1000 reported incidents per week in Switzerland. One in three SMEs has already been affected. In Central Switzerland, there have been over 100 relevant incidents in the past two years. "That is a worryingly high number. Cyber security in companies is therefore more important than ever. It is playing an increasingly important role in management and strategic planning at the highest level," Florian Wamser is convinced. The HSLU would like to make an important contribution with the new course.
