Sabine Östlund has been at the helm of the umbrella organization FH Switzerland since September 1, 2026. The 44-year-old corporate communications specialist succeeds Toni Schmid, who built up the national association for graduates of universities of applied sciences from its very beginnings and is now retiring.

Extensive communications experience in business and the media

Östlund brings a proven track record in media relations, public affairs, and strategic communications. Most recently, she headed internal communications at EY Switzerland. Prior to that, she worked as a communications expert at companies such as Sunrise, UPC, Verivox Switzerland, and Comparis. She completed her studies in journalism and corporate communications at the ZHAW, where she also earned a master’s degree in Communication Management and Leadership.

As the former president of ALUMNI ZHAW Columni, a member organization of FH Switzerland, she is well-connected within the university of applied sciences community and has firsthand knowledge of alumni concerns. In addition, she has a deep understanding of political processes—an important prerequisite for advocating on behalf of a national umbrella organization.

Strengthen the Voice of the University of Applied Sciences Community

As she takes office, Östlund sets out clear priorities: «University of Applied Sciences graduates make an important contribution to the economy and society. I want their perspectives to be heard even more clearly. Dialogue with our member organizations across the country is particularly important to me in this regard. Together with my team and our partners, I will continue to develop FH Switzerland, provide new impetus, and strengthen the voice of the university of applied sciences community.»

25 Years of Building the Organization Under Toni Schmid

Toni Schmid is stepping down as director after more than 25 years. He played a key role in building FH Switzerland from the ground up, established a strong network, and positioned the association as the leading national voice for FH graduates. «Sabine Östlund is well-equipped and highly motivated,» says Schmid. «I’m delighted to be able to hand over the reins and a great team to her.»

FH Switzerland is the only national umbrella organization for graduates from all disciplines at universities of applied sciences, uniting over 80,000 members and 44 affiliated organizations. The association is committed to creating strong framework conditions and ensuring high visibility for its members. The board is chaired on a volunteer basis by Council of States member Benjamin Mühlemann; the executive office is located in Zurich.
