Returning to work after an accident: good cooperation required

Last year, over 495,000 accidents were reported to Suva. 28,000 of these were serious cases resulting in prolonged absence from work. Fortunately, 90 percent of those affected succeed in returning to work. The support of the personal environment, the commitment of employers and targeted measures on the part of insurers are important for this success.

An accident often changes your life in seconds. Distraction or a careless moment can have long-lasting consequences. A quick return to work is crucial for those affected: studies show that the chance of returning to work is halved after six months of incapacity to work. In 2023, Suva registered over 495,000 accidents, around 28,000 of which resulted in at least three months' absence from work.

Effective measures for returning to work

To promote reintegration into the workplace, the accident insurer Suva relies on case management. Specially trained specialists accompany accident victims throughout the entire recovery process - from medical treatment and rehabilitation to coordination with doctors, employers and insurance companies. A professional perspective is a key factor for a successful recovery.

The social environment is just as important. Family, friends, colleagues and superiors can make a decisive contribution to healing with support, conversations and small gestures. Employers play a central role by offering secure jobs and daily structures. Work not only provides an income, but also a sense of purpose and belonging. Suva's experience shows that most accident victims want to return to work.

A win for everyone

The results confirm the success: around 90 percent of those affected return to work. This benefits everyone - accident victims gain quality of life and financial security, companies retain skilled workers and save costs, and Suva can keep premiums stable.

One example is bobsledder Sandro Michel. After a serious training accident, his leg was saved thanks to medical assistance. Today he is back at work and fighting for his sporting comeback. The support from his family, employer and Suva was crucial for him. His story is part of Suva's current reintegration campaign "Being there helps, no matter what", which is running on various channels until the end of September 2025.
