How Trump's tariffs will affect Switzerland as a business location

Trump's tariffs are a reality: a recent survey conducted by Swissmechanic among members of the MEM industries shows that the negative impact on Swiss companies is increasing. Already 35 percent of exporting companies see Switzerland as a weakened location, while 44 percent are not currently planning any specific measures.

In fact, many companies are feeling the initial effects of the new customs duties - but are not yet taking action. 64% are maintaining their investments in Switzerland, and the same proportion in the EU. This indicates a certain degree of stability, but should not be interpreted as a sign of the all-clear: Almost 40 percent of companies are still unable to assess the longer-term impact of the tariffs. "The tariffs are a reality - now it's no longer just about reaction, but about strategy. Switzerland as a business location needs clear political leadership," says Swissmechanic President Nicola Tettamanti.

The survey shows: Companies expect clear signals from politicians. 55% are calling for Switzerland to adopt a clearer trade policy position towards the USA, 46% would like to see a negotiation strategy to reduce tariffs and 32% are in favor of financial relief. Nevertheless, the US market remains relevant for many: 14% of respondents are considering price increases to mitigate the tariffs, while 9% want to reduce their presence in the USA or give it up completely. At the same time, 32% of companies are looking at alternative markets, particularly in the EU (25%) and India (7%).

The MEM industries thus act as an early warning system for the Swiss export economy: they are one of the first industries to feel the effects of global trade conflicts - and show how important a forward-looking economic policy capable of taking action would be.
