The first Swiss Medical Spa & Hospitality Think Tank was all about reflecting on best practice examples and exploring future potential arising from the combination of new medical and spa trends in the hospitality industry. Self-care and well-being are increasingly in the spotlight today. This is increasing the demand for medical services in the hospitality and tourism sector.<\/p>\n

High growth<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness tourism is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 7.5 percent through 2022. 58 percent of this global health spending is in the area of wellness - so it's a market that certainly deserves attention. Today's guests expect a balanced package - from preventive approaches in the interest of general health, such as nutrition and fitness, life coaching or stress management, to an environment that enables rapid recovery from a specific illness.<\/p>\n

\"Growth in the global medical spa market is being driven by rising numbers in aesthetic medicine and cosmetic treatment options, as well as growth in wellness trends in developed countries. Another driver is likely to be the increase in medical tourism in growth markets such as India, China and Brazil,\" said CV Wijeratne, Head of Spa & Wellness Management Major at SSTH.<\/p>\n

Later in the session, several speakers demonstrated that a growing demand for hospitality expertise and talent is also being felt in traditional medical treatments. Dr. Peter Yesawich of Brown Legacy Group explained that behind the \"Mother Standard\u00ae\" as practiced at Cancer Treatment Centers of America\u00ae is a consistent focus on the hospitality experience, or patient experience. In keeping with this holistic approach, which seeks to optimize the guest experience at every touchpoint, Lisa Clarke of Destination Medical Center's economic development agency has renovated the infrastructure of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The clinic itself has an excellent reputation, but until now did not have hosts who could provide patients with a safe haven between treatments and an accessible, engaging environment to ease their physical and emotional stress.<\/p>\n
