The mechanical and electrical engineering industries (MEM) have undergone a remarkable development in recent decades - from mechanization to automation and digitalization. It is currently at the beginning of the era of artificial intelligence (AI). \"AI offers enormous opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It enables increased efficiency and flexibility to better adapt to market changes. This gives SMEs the opportunity to hold their own against larger competitors,\" says J\u00fcrg Marti, Director of Swissmechanic Switzerland. However, AI also poses challenges for the industry, such as growing cybersecurity risks. These potentials and risks were highlighted at the fifth edition of the Swissmechanic Business Day.<\/p>\n

How AI is shaping the future of SME MEMs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Three outstanding speakers shaped the event and provided valuable impetus: Dr. Stephan Sigrist, founder and head of the think tank W.I.R.E., opened the day with a look into the future of artificial intelligence. He shed light on the potential impact of this technology on the economy and society and highlighted the associated opportunities and risks. Michael Jungo from the Swiss AI Center focused on specific examples of artificial intelligence applications in industry. Successful projects were presented that showed how SMEs can benefit from AI solutions, for example in the use of digital twins. Antoine Verdon, co-founder of AI Bridge, closed the day with a practice-oriented presentation. He explained how companies can use artificial intelligence strategically to achieve competitive advantages.<\/p>\n

Practical knowledge in master classes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In addition to the presentations, two practical masterclasses were offered: In a masterclass led by Swisscom, participants were introduced to the topic of cyber resilience. They learned how they can effectively protect their companies against digital threats by using their employees as the first line of defense. The second masterclass, held by the KLAR agency, focused on the topic of employer branding. A strong employer brand is crucial, especially in the \"war for talent\". Participants learned how they can successfully develop and use this to position themselves on the job market. AI is also changing many previously established processes in HR.<\/p>\n

Platform for exchange and innovation <\/strong><\/h3>\n

The KMU-MEM trade fair took place throughout the day alongside the event. Exhibitors presented their latest products and services here. The trade fair also provided an ideal platform for exchanging ideas with other participants and making valuable industry contacts. Events such as the business lunch made it possible to deepen discussions in a relaxed atmosphere and establish new business relationships. \"The Swissmechanic Business Day 2024 once again underlines the importance of networking in an increasingly digitalized and interconnected world,\" concludes Nicola Roberto Tettamanti, President of Swissmechanic Switzerland.<\/p>\n

The Swissmechanic Business Day 2024, the SME-MEM networking event, took place on September 3, 2024, at the Lucerne Exhibition Center.
