(Image : zVg)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Selon la Fondation Marcel Benoist, les d\u00e9couvertes du climatologue ont une grande importance pour la vie humaine et concernent l'un des principaux d\u00e9fis de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 actuelle. Le conseiller f\u00e9d\u00e9ral Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, pr\u00e9sident de la Fondation Marcel Benoist, a re\u00e7u le professeur Thomas Stocker \u00e0 Berne et l'a f\u00e9licit\u00e9 pour cette importante distinction.<\/p>\n<p>Le professeur Thomas Stocker est l'une des personnes cl\u00e9s de la recherche climatique au niveau national et international.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concentration des gaz \u00e0 effet de serre <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but de sa carri\u00e8re de chercheur, \u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1980, il s'est concentr\u00e9 sur les mod\u00e9lisations th\u00e9oriques, qu'il a ensuite combin\u00e9es avec les connaissances issues de diff\u00e9rentes archives climatiques. Il a ainsi d\u00e9couvert qu'il existe un lien \u00e9troit entre les modifications des courants oc\u00e9aniques et le climat.<\/p>\n<p>Son \u00e9quipe et ses coll\u00e8gues effectuent notamment des carottages de glace au Groenland et en Antarctique, o\u00f9 les concentrations de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9termin\u00e9es sur les 800 000 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Un climatologue renomm\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses recherches, le professeur Thomas Stocker apporte une contribution essentielle \u00e0 une meilleure compr\u00e9hension de la complexit\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me climatique mondial et des changements climatiques qui se profilent \u00e0 l'horizon. Dans son domaine, il compte parmi les scientifiques les plus cit\u00e9s en Suisse et est l'auteur et le co-auteur de plus de 200 articles scientifiques. Il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9compens\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs reprises pour ses travaux.<\/p>\n<p>Le professeur Thomas Stocker sait comment pr\u00e9senter de mani\u00e8re compr\u00e9hensible les probl\u00e9matiques de son domaine de recherche et ses d\u00e9couvertes non seulement \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 scientifique, mais aussi aux d\u00e9cideurs politiques et au grand public. Ses connaissances scientifiques sont tr\u00e8s bien accept\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Son rapport pour le groupe de travail du Groupe d'experts intergouvernemental sur l'\u00e9volution du climat (GIEC) des Nations unies, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9 par tous les pays sous sa pr\u00e9sidence en septembre 2013, a constitu\u00e9 la base scientifique de l'accord de Paris sur le climat.<\/p>\n<p>Il est \u00e9galement un m\u00e9diateur et un mentor acad\u00e9mique accompli. Au fil des d\u00e9cennies, il a transmis son savoir \u00e0 un grand nombre d'\u00e9tudiants et de chercheurs. Certains d'entre eux occupent aujourd'hui \u00e0 leur tour un poste de professeur en Suisse et \u00e0 l'\u00e9tranger.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Stocker dirige depuis 1993 le d\u00e9partement de physique climatique et environnementale \u00e0 l'Institut de physique de l'Universit\u00e9 de Berne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fondation Marcel Benoist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depuis 1920, le Prix scientifique suisse Marcel Benoist r\u00e9compense chaque ann\u00e9e des scientifiques \u00e9tablis en Suisse pour leurs travaux importants et leur impact sur la vie humaine. En presque cent ans d'histoire, dix laur\u00e9ats ont re\u00e7u le prix Nobel par la suite. Les deux EPF ainsi que les dix universit\u00e9s de Suisse sont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es au sein du conseil de la Fondation Marcel Benoist.<\/p>\n<p>Le conseil de fondation s'emploie \u00e0 donner une base durable \u00e0 la Fondation Marcel Benoist, bient\u00f4t centenaire. Cette ann\u00e9e, le Prix scientifique suisse Marcel Benoist est dot\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois de 250'000 francs. La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie solennelle de remise du Prix scientifique suisse Marcel Benoist aura lieu le 1er novembre 2017 \u00e0 Berne.
