L'une des principales causes de la d\u00e9forestation est l'investissement des particuliers dans l'extension des surfaces cultiv\u00e9es - en particulier dans les r\u00e9gions tropicales. Non seulement la d\u00e9forestation lib\u00e8re du carbone, mais elle entra\u00eene \u00e9galement la perte de la biodiversit\u00e9 et des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes, r\u00e9duisant ainsi leurs fonctions vitales.<\/p>\n

Les \"flex-crops\" - produits agricoles tels que le soja, l'huile de palme ou la canne \u00e0 sucre, qui servent \u00e0 la fois \u00e0 l'alimentation humaine et \u00e0 la production d'aliments pour animaux ou \u00e0 des fins industrielles - jouent un r\u00f4le particuli\u00e8rement important dans ce contexte. Les \u00e9tudes men\u00e9es jusqu'\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent ont montr\u00e9 que la culture de plantes ol\u00e9agineuses comme l'huile de palme ou le soja est responsable \u00e0 elle seule d'environ un quart des \u00e9missions dues \u00e0 la d\u00e9forestation dans le monde. L'essor des cultures flexibles est d\u00fb \u00e0 plusieurs \u00e9volutions socio-\u00e9conomiques mondiales, l'une d'entre elles \u00e9tant l'augmentation des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s. Jusqu'\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, l'influence des investissements de personnes extr\u00eamement riches n'a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tudi\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Une plus grande richesse entra\u00eene une augmentation des surfaces cultiv\u00e9es en flex-crop<\/h2>\n

Une nouvelle \u00e9tude men\u00e9e par Graziano Ceddia au Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) de l'Universit\u00e9 de Berne a examin\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois l'impact des investissements agricoles des super-riches sur l'expansion des flex-crops dans le Sud mondial. L'\u00e9tude, qui s'est concentr\u00e9e sur 21 pays d'Am\u00e9rique latine et d'Asie du Sud-Est sur la p\u00e9riode 1991-2014, d\u00e9montre qu'il est possible d'augmenter les rendements agricoles : L'augmentation de la fortune des riches particuliers est fortement corr\u00e9l\u00e9e \u00e0 l'afflux d'investissements directs \u00e9trangers dans l'agriculture dans ces deux r\u00e9gions du monde - et entra\u00eene ainsi l'extension des surfaces cultiv\u00e9es en flex-crops.<\/p>\n

Dans le m\u00eame temps, il est apparu que les investisseurs mondiaux \u00e9taient attir\u00e9s par l'attente de rendements \u00e9lev\u00e9s de tels placements de capitaux. \"Les investisseurs priv\u00e9s placent leurs capitaux dans le secteur agricole du Sud mondial parce que les rendements des investissements traditionnels ont diminu\u00e9\", explique Graziano Ceddia, auteur de l'\u00e9tude.
\nEn r\u00e9sum\u00e9, la concentration de la richesse chez les riches investisseurs priv\u00e9s joue un r\u00f4le d\u00e9cisif dans l'extension des surfaces agricoles dans le Sud mondial et contribue ainsi directement \u00e0 la d\u00e9forestation. Selon l'\u00e9tude, qui vient d'\u00eatre publi\u00e9e dans Nature Sustainability, au cours de la p\u00e9riode \u00e9tudi\u00e9e, une augmentation de 1 % de la fortune des super-riches a entra\u00een\u00e9 une extension de 2,4 \u00e0 10 % des surfaces cultiv\u00e9es en flex-crop.<\/p>\n

La r\u00e9partition du patrimoine est encore plus importante que celle des revenus<\/h2>\n

\"Les r\u00e9sultats de l'\u00e9tude soulignent l'importance d'\u00e9tudier l'impact des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s sur l'environnement en se concentrant non seulement sur la r\u00e9partition des revenus, mais aussi sur la r\u00e9partition des richesses\", explique Graziano Ceddia. Car seules les grandes fortunes permettent des investissements priv\u00e9s \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle dans le secteur agricole. Et la richesse est r\u00e9partie de mani\u00e8re beaucoup plus in\u00e9gale que les revenus. \"L'\u00e9tude montre clairement que les in\u00e9galit\u00e9s doivent \u00eatre r\u00e9duites de toute urgence si l'on veut minimiser les risques environnementaux\". En outre, la recherche sur les liens entre la r\u00e9partition des richesses, les investissements et la destruction de l'environnement doit \u00eatre intensifi\u00e9e.<\/p>\n
