Image : Gian Vaitl \/ Empa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>L'installation de fabrication pour la r\u00e9volution des batteries a l'air plut\u00f4t inoffensive : Il s'agit d'une imprimante 3D modifi\u00e9e, disponible dans le commerce, qui se trouve dans une pi\u00e8ce du b\u00e2timent du laboratoire de l'Empa. La v\u00e9ritable innovation r\u00e9side dans la recette des encres g\u00e9latineuses que cette imprimante peut projeter sur une surface. Le m\u00e9lange en question est compos\u00e9 de nanofibres de cellulose et de nanocristaux de cellulose, auxquels s'ajoute du carbone sous forme de suie, de graphite et de charbon actif. Pour liqu\u00e9fier tout cela, les chercheurs utilisent de la glyc\u00e9rine, de l'eau et deux types d'alcool diff\u00e9rents. \u00c0 cela s'ajoute une pinc\u00e9e de sel de cuisine pour la conductivit\u00e9 ionique.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Un sandwich compos\u00e9 de quatre couches<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Pour construire un supercondensateur fonctionnel \u00e0 partir de ces ingr\u00e9dients, il faut quatre couches, qui sortent toutes l'une apr\u00e8s l'autre de l'imprimante 3D : un film flexible, une couche conductrice de courant, puis l'\u00e9lectrode et enfin l'\u00e9lectrolyte. Le tout est ensuite pli\u00e9 comme un sandwich, avec l'\u00e9lectrolyte au milieu.<\/p>\n<p>Ce qui en r\u00e9sulte est un miracle \u00e9cologique. Le mini-condensateur du laboratoire de l'Empa est capable de stocker du courant pendant des heures et d'alimenter d\u00e8s \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent une petite horloge num\u00e9rique. Il r\u00e9siste \u00e0 des milliers de cycles de charge et de d\u00e9charge et probablement aussi \u00e0 des ann\u00e9es de stockage, m\u00eame \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures glaciales. En outre, le condensateur r\u00e9siste \u00e0 la pression et aux chocs.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Alimentation \u00e9lectrique biod\u00e9gradable<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mais le meilleur dans tout \u00e7a, c'est que lorsqu'on n'en a plus besoin, on peut le jeter au compost ou simplement le laisser dans la nature. Au bout de deux mois, le condensateur s'est d\u00e9compos\u00e9 en ses composants, il ne reste de lui que quelques particules de charbon visibles. Les chercheurs ont \u00e9galement d\u00e9j\u00e0 essay\u00e9 cette m\u00e9thode.<\/p>\n<p>\"Cela semble tr\u00e8s simple, mais \u00e7a ne l'\u00e9tait pas du tout\", explique Xavier Aeby du d\u00e9partement \"Cellulose &amp; Wood Materials\" de l'Empa. De longues s\u00e9ries d'essais ont \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaires pour que tous les param\u00e8tres soient corrects, que tous les composants sortent de l'imprimante de mani\u00e8re fiable et que le condensateur fonctionne finalement. Aeby : \"En tant que chercheurs, nous ne voulons pas seulement faire des essais, mais aussi comprendre ce qui se passe \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur de nos mat\u00e9riaux\".<\/p>\n<p>C'est avec son chef Gustav Nystr\u00f6m qu'Aeby a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 et mis en \u0153uvre le concept de stockage d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 biod\u00e9gradable. Aeby a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 la technique des microsyst\u00e8mes \u00e0 l'EPFL et a rejoint l'Empa pour sa th\u00e8se de doctorat. Nystr\u00f6m et son \u00e9quipe m\u00e8nent depuis des ann\u00e9es des recherches sur des gels fonctionnels \u00e0 base de nanocellulose. Ce mat\u00e9riau n'est pas seulement une mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re \u00e9cologique et renouvelable, mais il est aussi extr\u00eamement polyvalent gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa chimie interne.<\/p>\n<p>\"Le projet d'un accumulateur d'\u00e9nergie compostable me tenait \u00e0 c\u0153ur depuis longtemps\", explique Nystr\u00f6m. \"Nous avons postul\u00e9 pour des fonds de recherche internes \u00e0 l'Empa avec notre projet 'Printed Paper Batteries' et avons ensuite pu d\u00e9marrer nos activit\u00e9s avec ces fonds. Nous avons maintenant atteint un premier objectif\".<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Application dans l'\"Internet des objets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Le supercondensateur pourrait bient\u00f4t devenir un composant cl\u00e9 de l'\"Internet des objets\", pr\u00e9voient Nystr\u00f6m et Aeby. \"A l'avenir, on pourrait par exemple charger bri\u00e8vement de tels condensateurs \u00e0 l'aide d'un champ \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tique, ils fourniraient alors pendant des heures du courant pour un capteur ou un micro-\u00e9metteur\". Cela permettrait par exemple de v\u00e9rifier le contenu de certains paquets pendant le trajet d'exp\u00e9dition. On pourrait \u00e9galement envisager d'alimenter en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 des capteurs dans le cadre de la surveillance de l'environnement ou de l'agriculture - il ne serait pas n\u00e9cessaire de r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer ces piles, mais on pourrait simplement les laisser dans la nature une fois le travail effectu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Le diagnostic de laboratoire \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 du patient (\"Point of Care Testing\"), actuellement en plein essor, contribuera \u00e9galement \u00e0 l'augmentation du nombre de petits appareils \u00e9lectroniques. Il s'agit notamment de petits appareils de test utilis\u00e9s au chevet des patients ou d'appareils d'autotest pour les diab\u00e9tiques.
