Immagine: RAG<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\"Underground Sun Conversion\": la tecnologia dal nome eccitante brevettata dall'azienda energetica austriaca RAG Austria AG offre un modo per immagazzinare energia rinnovabile stagionalmente e su larga scala e renderla disponibile tutto l'anno. In estate, l'energia rinnovabile in eccesso - per esempio l'energia solare - viene convertita in idrogeno (H2). Questo viene poi immagazzinato insieme all'anidride carbonica (CO2) in depositi sotterranei naturali - per esempio ex depositi di gas naturale - ad una profondit\u00e0 di oltre 1000 metri.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c8 qui che entrano in gioco i piccoli aiutanti: i microrganismi della preistoria, i cosiddetti archaea, convertono idrogeno e CO2 in metano rinnovabile (CH4) attraverso il loro metabolismo. Gli archei sono diffusi in tutto il mondo, prevalentemente in ambienti anaerobici, cio\u00e8 a basso contenuto di ossigeno, e gi\u00e0 milioni di anni fa erano responsabili della conversione della biomassa in gas naturale. Alimentando idrogeno e CO2 nei depositi porosi di arenaria adatti, questo processo \u00e8 praticamente ricominciato da capo. In un progetto finanziato dal programma quadro di ricerca europeo ERA-Net e in questo paese dall'Ufficio federale dell'energia (UFE), il potenziale tecnico ed economico in Svizzera e Austria sar\u00e0 esplorato nei prossimi due anni. In Svizzera, la societ\u00e0 energetica Energie 360\u00b0, l'Empa, l'Universit\u00e0 di Berna e l'Universit\u00e0 di Scienze Applicate OST nella Svizzera orientale sono coinvolti. L'Empa sta sviluppando una prospettiva sull'intero sistema energetico: \"Stiamo esaminando quando e dove si verifica il surplus di elettricit\u00e0, dove sarebbero le fonti di CO2 adatte e infine dove c'\u00e8 la domanda di gas naturale rinnovabile\", spiega Martin R\u00fcdis\u00fcli del dipartimento Urban Energy Systems dell'Empa. Insieme alle condizioni geologiche, che vengono studiate dall'Universit\u00e0 di Berna, e alle condizioni economiche di contorno, che vengono elaborate da OST, deve essere creata una mappa dei luoghi possibili per l'applicazione della tecnologia \"Underground Sun Conversion\".<\/p>\n<p>Martin R\u00fcdis\u00fcli considera la tecnologia promettente. Soprattutto perch\u00e9, oltre alla metanazione biologica, fornisce anche una risposta al problema dello stoccaggio stagionale: \"Anche con un grande aumento della produzione di gas metano, non ci sarebbe bisogno di espandere l'infrastruttura di stoccaggio fuori terra grazie allo stoccaggio naturale nell'interno della terra\", dice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sulla via della decarbonizzazione del nostro sistema energetico<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La volatilit\u00e0 delle fonti di energia rinnovabili \u00e8 una delle grandi sfide della transizione energetica. In inverno abbiamo fondamentalmente troppo poca elettricit\u00e0 rinnovabile, in estate troppa. In un'analisi del potenziale della tecnologia \"power-to-gas\" - cio\u00e8 la conversione dell'elettricit\u00e0 rinnovabile in vettori energetici chimici come l'idrogeno o il metano - in Svizzera, il ricercatore dell'Empa R\u00fcdis\u00fcli ha previsto un'eccedenza di ben 10 TWh di elettricit\u00e0 solare in Svizzera nei prossimi decenni - a condizione che circa la met\u00e0 delle superfici dei tetti adatti sia sviluppata con il fotovoltaico, cosa a sua volta necessaria se si vuole sostituire l'elettricit\u00e0 nucleare non pi\u00f9 necessaria.
