BancaStato Launches Regulated Crypto Trading with Sygnum and Avaloq

The Ticino cantonal bank BancaStato is integrating Sygnum’s regulated digital asset services into its Avaloq banking platform. Customers can now buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Solana directly through the existing web and mobile banking platforms. This makes BancaStato the first bank in Avaloq’s SaaS environment to offer its customers crypto trading via API with Sygnum.

Sygnum, a global digital asset banking group, announces that BancaStato is joining its B2B banking platform. The bank has integrated Sygnum’s API with its Avaloq core banking system and digital banking channels, thereby enabling regulated crypto trading directly within its web and mobile banking channels. BancaStato thus joins more than 25 other banks and international financial institutions on Sygnum’s B2B platform.

Cryptocurrencies Directly in Online Banking

Banca dello Stato del Cantone Ticino is a Swiss cantonal bank headquartered in the canton of Ticino, founded in 1915. The bank uses the Avaloq platform for its core banking system and digital banking channels under a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. Through its integration with Sygnum’s B2B platform, BancaStato now offers its customers regulated access to a range of cryptocurrencies—directly within its existing Avaloq web and mobile banking applications.

To start with, BancaStato customers can buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Solana (SOL). Market orders can be placed via e-banking and the mobile app based on either the number of units or the USD value.

Execution is handled via Sygnum’s B2B API, which enables native buying or selling directly through the Avaloq systems and the existing secure infrastructure. Since the streamlined setup does not require a separate order management system (OMS), costs and complexity are reduced, and trading functions can be flexibly adapted to risk management requirements.

Institutional Custody and Protection in the Event of Bankruptcy

BancaStato’s clients’ assets are held in Sygnum’s multi-tiered custody solution at an institutional level. This solution includes hardware and software controls, strict governance processes, and independent external audits. All client assets are held off-balance-sheet in full compliance with regulatory and legal requirements—which provides clients with additional protection in the event of bankruptcy.

Fritz Jost, Chief B2B Officer at Sygnum, comments: «We are proud to welcome BancaStato to our rapidly growing B2B network. This underscores the growing demand for Sygnum’s regulated, API-based digital asset services, which can be integrated directly into existing core banking systems. The fact that BancaStato is the first bank in the Avaloq SaaS environment to enable its customers to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrencies via API with Sygnum directly from their e-banking platforms marks a significant step forward in the maturity and scalability of regulated digital asset infrastructure.»

Dr. Curzio De Gottardi, Head of the Products and Services Division and Vice Chairman of the Executive Board at BancaStato, explains: «The seamless integration of traditional investment solutions—and now digital assets as well—further strengthens our Group’s future-proof offering. We are proud to partner with Sygnum on this strategic initiative and look forward to leveraging Sygnum’s crypto-native banking expertise and secure infrastructure.»

Christian Haux, Managing Director for Switzerland and Liechtenstein at Avaloq, adds: «The project demonstrates that strong integration enables banks to respond more quickly to investors» evolving expectations while maintaining their services on a unified platform. For BancaStato clients, the new service is integrated into web and mobile banking, allowing them to view and manage their digital and traditional portfolios in one place. This also marks an important milestone for Switzerland as a hub for innovation.”

Expanding B2B Network and New MiCAR License

With BancaStato, Sygnum’s B2B network in Ticino and southern Switzerland is expanding further in terms of depth and reach. Through its partner banks, Sygnum already enables more than one-third of the Swiss population to hold digital assets with complete confidence. The network includes, among others, PostFinance, Zuger Kantonalbank, SocGen Forge, Bordier & Cie, Incore Bank, Bergos, PKB, Bison Bank, and VZ Vermögenszentrum.

On June 30, 2026, Sygnum Europe received a license from the Liechtenstein Financial Market Authority (FMA) as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) under the EU Regulation on Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCAR). This allows EU banks to leverage Sygnum’s expertise to reduce risks, time-to-market, and capital requirements when launching regulated digital asset services.
