Red Hat Summit Connect: Open source AI for digital sovereignty
Around 800 experts met at the Red Hat Summit Connect Zurich in Dübendorf to discuss AI advances and geopolitical challenges. With its open source solutions, Red Hat is positioning itself as a partner for hybrid cloud strategies that enable innovation and efficiency gains without giving up digital sovereignty.

The rapid progress in the field of AI and the consequences of the current geopolitical shifts for companies and administrations in Switzerland were the focus of this year's Red Hat Summit: Connect Zurich. Around 800 specialists, partners and customers of the open source specialist met in the multi-purpose hall «The Hall» in Dübendorf to discuss cross-industry solutions.
Open source as the key to digital sovereignty
After the welcome address by Sandhya Prabhu, Ecosystem Leader Western Europe at Red Hat, and Richard Zobrist, Country Manager Switzerland at Red Hat, the opening speech focused on the importance of the right technology partner for a successful IT strategy. Chris Morgan, Vice President Evangelism & Strategic Initiatives at Red Hat, pointed out the particular advantages of open source solutions in the hybrid cloud, including in the AI sector. Innovation and efficiency gains through AI are possible without having to give up one's own digital sovereignty. Red Hat sees itself positioned for this with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, Red Hat OpenShift AI and the recently launched Red Hat AI 3 as well as its open ecosystem and partner network.

Technological basis and AI management
Joachim Aertebjerg, EMEA ISV Partner Director at Intel, spoke about the technological basis for trustworthy scaling of AI applications. This has been made possible in particular by advances in the areas of virtualization and platform security. The complex management of AI agents in an open cloud framework was described by Harsha Vathsavayi, Product Manager at Roche, and Steffen Wagner, EMEA CTO of HashiCorp, who emphasized the need for centralized processes and robust identity and authorization systems to ensure security and compliance.
René Räber, CTO of Microsoft Switzerland, and Anton Nesterov, Senior Azure Solution Engineer at Microsoft, presented important functions in the areas of virtualization, security and data sovereignty in hybrid cloud architectures based on Microsoft Azure with Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO).
Red Hat uses its own technologies
Marco Bill-Peter, CIO of Red Hat, and Chris Wright, CTO of Red Hat, gave a special insight: They described how the company uses its own open source technologies, including for internal platforms based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift as well as for automation with the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform Ansible.

Practical experience from the Swiss economy
Other sessions were dedicated to practical experiences with Red Hat solutions. Matthias Mertens, Cloud Solution Architect at Helvetia Baloise, presented how the insurance group is minimizing risks in public and private clouds and local environments in partnership with HashiCorp. Mark Hinnen, System Architect at SBB, spoke about the use of Red Hat OpenShift and the approach of managing critical external dependencies declaratively using Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs).
Dmytro Zadorozhnyi, Senior DevOps Engineer at EFG Bank, spoke about the private banking group's digital transformation, where Azure Red Hat OpenShift was seamlessly integrated into the Azure ecosystem to ensure improved scalability, security and operational efficiency. Tripalsinh Jadeja, Infrastructure Product Owner at Swisscom, presented how Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization was used to accelerate the deployment of traditional infrastructure and deliver modern cloud-native applications on a unified platform.
AI as an opportunity for women in the technology sector
A separate panel discussion led by the Women's Leadership Circle was dedicated to the question of whether AI could help to stop the exodus of women from the technology sector and reverse this trend. The recommendation was to show female specialists the special opportunities for development and advancement in the field of AI transformation.
