Demand for AI professionals is rising significantly in Switzerland. Between July 2025 and June 2026, nearly 5,000 AI jobs were posted—32 percent more than in the same period the previous year. Small and medium-sized enterprises account for the largest share of this growth. This is shown in the new Swiss AI Jobs Report 2026 from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The question of how artificial intelligence is changing the job market is currently on everyone’s lips. The latest Swiss AI Jobs Report from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts provides concrete data on how many and what kinds of AI jobs were advertised in Switzerland. The number of AI job postings in the reporting year rose by 32 percent compared to the same period the previous year. The demand isn’t limited to the IT sector: Demand for AI specialists has increased across all ten of the largest industries—including information technology, finance and insurance, education and research, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, trade and logistics, the public sector, engineering, manufacturing, legal and management consulting, and healthcare.

Although the IT sector posted the most job openings, with 1,211, public institutions recorded the strongest growth at 67 percent. ’In particular, the growth in AI jobs in the public sector suggests that policymakers and government officials are strengthening their confidence in AI as a technology of the future,« says study author Curdin Derungs of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Demand is growing particularly strongly outside of large corporations. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) accounted for 76 percent of total job growth. They posted 62 percent of all AI job openings. «AI is no longer just the domain of large technology companies; it is increasingly being integrated into the processes and offerings of established SMEs,» says Derungs.

Experienced Professionals Wanted

The report also makes it clear: AI is moving beyond the testing phase. Nearly 40 percent of all job postings are for data engineering and machine learning engineering—that is, for specialists who build the data infrastructure and ensure that models run reliably. In addition, roles such as product owner, manager, and AI consultant were advertised significantly more frequently. In these roles, decisions are made about which applications a company needs and how it will implement them.

Consequently, companies are increasingly seeking experienced professionals who combine technical and strategic expertise. The number of senior-level positions rose by 42 percent. More positions were also advertised for entry-level professionals. However, permanent junior-level positions account for only 5 percent of all job postings. Despite the high demand, the AI job market is highly competitive: «New graduates describe the job market as extremely competitive. What surprised us, however, is that even professionals with several years of experience increasingly perceive the job search as challenging,» says Derungs.

Zurich at the top

Regionally, demand is concentrated primarily in the canton of Zurich and Central Switzerland. The canton of Zurich recorded the highest number with 2,181 job postings, accounting for 45 percent of all AI jobs in Switzerland. Relative to population size, many cantons in Central Switzerland are above the Swiss average. There, there were between 100 and 140 advertised AI positions per 100,000 residents, while the Swiss average is 96. In the canton of Lucerne, the number of job postings increased by 55 percent.
